Review: OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter

OGX Coconut Curls Hair Butter review

I’ve been on my kinky curly hair journey for about a year now, and one of the biggest struggles us naturalista’s experience is finding the right products for our hair. There are so many out there to choose from. Especially with this new found popularity of natural hair in the mainstream media. The big question is, what products work and what don’t? I’ve decided to test out different brands and styling products on my hair to find my holy grail, and of course share the juicy details with you along the way.

As you remember, I recently reviewed the Maui Moisture Curl Quench + Coconut Oil line. On my list, today is the OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter. The OGX Beauty Brand’s reputation definitely precedes itself as I’ve heard many great things about their products among the natural hair community. So I was pretty excited to experiment with one of their more popular product offerings.

OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter and Wash & Go Styling

The hair butter is thick, rich and creamy and the smell is delicious. You can never go wrong with coconut scented hair. The product works easily through my hair. Despite it being rich and creamy in texture, once it coats the strands it does get absorbed and it tends to feel like there is less product than there actually is. Do not be deceived! Resist the urge to apply extra product to your hair. Be sure to work in sections to ensure the hair butter evenly coats all your strands for maximum curl definition.

Pro-tip: Always keep a spray bottle filled with water on-hand. When you’re doing your wash and go your hair can start getting dry as your working through your sections. Use the spray bottle to remoisturize your strands. You get your best curl definition when your hair is wet.

During winter I typically don’t air dry my hair. The below freezing temperatures outdoors don’t make for a great environment for wet strands and can actually damage your hair.  My alternative to air drying is to blow dry with a diffuser on low heat. The diffuser helps achieve defined curls with minimized frizz. I noticed that OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter is a nice light coating on the hair allowing for quicker drying time. The product may look white while your hair is wet, but that goes away once your hair has dried.

Finished result of using OGX Coconut Curls Hair Butter for wash and go styling.

Pictured above was the end result I achieved by styling my hair with OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter. I must admit I was extremely pleased with the results. One of things I immediately noticed using this product on my hair as well as my sons was that our hair shrinkage was noticably less. This is a huge plus as most of us naturalistas are trying to minimize shrinkage as best as we can. Another huge plus about the product was that my curls were well defined but also extremely soft to touch. My hair also had lots of movement.

OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter better than Maui Moisture?

For me personally, the answer is yes. Don’t get me wrong, I had really good results using the Maui Moisture product line but for my personal hair type and texture the OGX Coconut Curls Hair Butter just went a step further in terms of the quality of the end result.

I will however note the one negative: in comparison to the Maui Moisture, OGX Coconut Curls Curling Hair Butter packaging is a bit on the smaller side so if you use a lot of product you’ll probably be buying this wholesale! This is admittedly a little daunting for me- the thought of having to buy more product over a shorter time span. However, as I mentioned previously the curling hair butter is a keeper, so it may be worth the sacrifice for some of us.
